Day 3 to 6: Hippo Lodge - Kafue National Park

INTRODUCTION

Hippo Lodge is an owner-run camp and is geared towards creating a personalised and intimate atmosphere that one would expect from a classic safari lodge. Bruce Whitfield, who has over a decade of experience guiding in Kafue National Park, will show you the magic of the bush with his extensive knowledge in African wildlife.

The lodge is situated on the east bank of the Kafue River, in the northern sector of the Kafue National Park, 100 km west-northwest of Mumbwa. Northeast of Hippo is the Lubungu ferry crossing on the old Kasempa road. Approximately 40 km downstream is Lufupa Lodge.

Hippo is a comfortable 4-hour drive from Lusaka in the dry season (May to mid-November) and the road is passable all year round for a reasonably high-clearance vehicle, although a reliable 4x4 vehicle is needed in the wet season (December to April). The Hippo airstrip lies less than 2 km from the lodge and is open in the dry season. A flight from Lusaka International to the camp takes no more than an hour and a half. This is the only airstrip in the area (1100 km long).

Activities include 4x4 game drives; walking safaris with armed escort; excellent birding and fishing; river cruises; or Indulge yourself in the tranquil and healing azure waters of our nearby natural hot springs. View Activities Available

If you want to be closer to nature choose the secluded self-catering camp on the beautiful, wooded Lunga Island 25 minutes upstream, with 6 furnished en-suite safari tents and a fully equipped kitchen and braai area. Read about Hippo Lunga Island.

Hippo Lodge has a peaceful atmosphere heightened by its seclusion deep within the Zambian bush, far from the bustle of modern city life. Come and fish, go game viewing or simply relax on the deck and watch the waters of the Kafue flow by as the sun sets on another perfect African day.
