The thrill of adventure

What better way to get your adrenaline pumping and your heart racing than engaging in an adventure sport?! Thrill and adventure seekers around the world have a variety of avenues to choose from, when it comes to satisfying those cravings for thrill. From diving into the depths of an ocean, zip lining across a rain forest, parasailing, bungee jumping, paragliding, rock climbing or toeing a rope, the thrill you experience when engaged in any of these activities is unmatched. What tops the list for me though, is skydiving! One of the most exciting adventure sports to exist, skydiving is in no way suitable for the fainthearted!

Skydive to experience unmatched thrill

Skydiving is basically jumping out of a plane once it’s reached a certain altitude, and freefalling through the air before you open your parachute for a smooth landing. Sounds pretty simple and straightforward right? Except that it is one of the most thrilling adventure sports to exist, and therefore requires training, skill and precision, if you want to ensure you land alive and in one piece at the end of the dive.

Best places to skydive

There are several locations that offer excellent conditions for skydiving around the world. Your choice of location is dictated by the kind of experience you’re looking for. From the views you get to see, the height of the dive, the terrain below – there are plenty of factors that will dictate your choice of location. Popular skydiving locations around the world include the Fox Glacier in New Zealand, Interlaken in Switzerland, Snohomish in Washington, Wollongong Beach in Sydney and the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, among a whole lot of other locations. An evergreen favorite is the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

Skydiving in Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

Many factors contribute to making Dubai an ideal destination for skydiving. To begin with, the location offers scenic views of wide expanses of the desert, sea and a modern cityscape, with one of the biggest highlights being the view of the Palm Jumeirah, one of the largest artificial islands that surround a part of Dubai. This man-made palm structure is stunning, and to view it from high up above is an experience that is rather unforgettable. You also have the option of a desert campus view when you opt to skydive in Dubai.

Skydive Dubai is the sole operator for skydiving and they offer great skydiving packages. Whether you happen to be a first time skydiver, or you’re an experienced skydiver, you’re in very safe hands when skydiving here. Of course, skydiving in the outdoors is what its all about, but if you’re a first time skydiver and you want to get an idea of what it feels like, before you take that mighty jump, try your hand at indoor skydiving to familiarize yourself with the sport.

The ultimate skydiving experience

Now that you’ve sampled a taste of what it’s like to skydive indoors, how about experiencing the real thing? The instructors at Skydive Dubai are some of the best in the world, and take you through lots of training in preparation for your big jump. For first time skydivers, you’ll be undergoing a tandem jump where you will be harnessed to your instructor. For experienced divers, you have what it takes to skydive solo! For those keen on getting trained, there are different trainings available that you can choose from. A solo skydiving course called Accelerated Freefall is for you if you don’t want to be harnessed to an instructor. This course takes you through various lessons and training sessions on skydiving, before you can dive solo. First timers undergo what they call a First Jump Course or FJC that will cover the basics of skydiving, including basic safety, equipment familiarization, body positions in freefalling, deployment and control of canopy, basic understanding of the aircraft and procedures to be followed, and finally, how to land. The basic training takes about 8 hours. Pay attention to each and every step being taught – you wont want to make a wrong move 13,000 feet up in the air! Skydivers keen on gaining more experience on the subjects can get themselves licensed with a USPA A license which permits you to skydive at skydiving locations around the world.

Requirements to skydive

In addition to a basic training, there are certain other requirements that you need to fulfill before you skydive in Dubai. There are weight and body mass index restrictions, and both are checked before you make any payment for your skydiving experience. Also, don’t g binge drinking the day before your skydive. No alcohol or drugs in your system for at least 24 hours before your dive. A doctor’s certificate is required if you suffer from certain ailments, and you need to sign a waiver before you proceed to skydive. Also, give skydiving a miss if you’re expecting!

The freefall!

Now that you’ve undergone the necessary training, signed your waiver and meet all the requirements, its time to experience your skydive! The team at Skydive Dubai does everything to make sure you have a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience, and they’re great at making you feel calm and relaxed. Also, you’ll have tons of pictures and videos taken for you on a GoPro to capture every moment of your skydiving experience. With a tandem freefall, you will be strapped to your instructor and will get to jump together, so you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I’d recommend a tandem jump if you’re attempting it for the first time. You’ll get to focus your energies on enjoying the views as you freefall, rather than worry about opening up your parachute in time! Once the plane reaches 13,000 feet, you exit the plan and freefall for about 60 seconds. Soak in the stunning views of the palm down below, along with the many other iconic structures of Dubai, including the Burj Khalifa, the Burj Al Arab, the Atlantis and the world Islands. To know that everything you see down below is man-made adds to this awe-inspiring experience. At about 6000 feet, your parachute will be deployed and over the next few minutes you’ll gently descend down to land.

After you land, spend the next few minutes soaking in the experience you’ve just encountered! It is sure going to be one of the many skydiving experiences you’ll have, coz no skydiver stops at just one dive.
